Traditional Sew-In aftercare: First 2 Weeks (Sweat, Swim, Sleep)

That neat parting and natural finish everyone compliments starts with one rule: don’t wash for 48–72 hours. We’ve had clients leave obsessed with how natural their install looks and how clean the parting is, and the fastest way to lose that “fresh” look is soaking the braid base too soon. In Atlanta heat, it’s tempting to wash right away after a sweaty day, but the first few days are about letting everything settle so your Traditional Sew-In stays flat, secure, and comfortable.
First 24–48 hours: keep it dry, keep it flat
Right after your Traditional Sew-In, your natural hair is braided and the extensions are sewn in to create that classic, long-lasting style. So the goal for the first two days is simple: protect the foundation.
Quick rules that save installs: No washing for 48–72 hours, skip steam and saunas, and don’t pull your hair into tight updos that tug the perimeter.
What to do tonight
Wrap your hair. A silk scarf works great, and a silk pillowcase is a solid backup. If you like a little extra hold, you can smooth a scarf over the top and secure it so the style stays flat while you sleep.
What to avoid (even if you’re running around downtown)
Try not to over-handle the hair. No constant brushing, no scratching under the tracks, and no heavy oils on day one. If you’re heading out near Mercedes-Benz Stadium or downtown nightlife, keep a small edge brush and a scarf in your bag for a quick smooth-down instead of re-styling in the mirror 10 times.
Days 3–7 in Atlanta humidity: sweat rules, itch control, and style protection
This is the week where Atlanta weather tests you. Sweat and humidity tend to puff hair up at the top, and buildup can make your scalp feel itchy under a sew-in. We generally recommend keeping workouts light the first week if you can. If you can’t, we’ll work with your real life and give you a plan to keep the base clean without loosening it.
If you’re exercising
- Use a soft, absorbent headband along your hairline so sweat doesn’t sit on the perimeter.
- After the workout, cool-dry your roots with a blow dryer on a low, cool setting. Don’t trap moisture under a scarf right away.
- If your scalp feels sticky, use a damp cloth to gently wipe the part and hairline, then dry it. You’re cleaning the scalp without soaking the braid base.
When a wash is needed sooner
If you notice a strong scalp odor, itching that doesn’t settle after you cool-dry, or visible product sitting at your part, it’s usually time to wash. And yes, we’ve had clients tell us they’ve been getting compliments nonstop since walking out, so it’s worth protecting the look instead of overloading it with dry shampoo and heavy sprays.
Week 2–4: how to wash, detangle, and swim without matting
Once you’re past the 48–72 hour mark, you can wash, but do it the sew-in way. You’re cleaning your scalp and protecting the stitching. That’s how you keep the install looking natural and moving the way it did when we finished those layers and blends.
The wash routine we like (simple, not fussy)
- Start with a diluted, sulfate-free shampoo in an applicator bottle if you have one. Focus on the scalp and between parts.
- Use the pads of your fingers. No nails. No aggressive scrubbing over the track areas.
- Rinse thoroughly and follow with a lightweight conditioner on the hair lengths. Keep heavier conditioner off the braid base when possible.
- Dry your sew-in all the way. Air-drying is where mildew smells and itching usually start.
Swimming with a Traditional Sew-In
You can swim, but don’t treat it like your hair is “safe” just because it’s installed. Before you get in, rinse with clean water and smooth a light leave-in through the hair lengths so it absorbs less pool or salt water. A swim cap helps, especially if you’re doing chlorine. After swimming, rinse immediately, then gently detangle with a wide-tooth comb starting at the ends.
Castleberry Hill tip: If you’re coming from Five Points MARTA for a quick follow-up across Atlanta, Decatur, or East Point, keep your hair in two loose braids and a scarf on the ride. It cuts down on friction and keeps your top looking smoother when you get where you’re going.
Tools and products that keep sew-in care easy (and your edges happy)
You don’t need a bathroom full of products. You need the right few, used consistently and lightly. Heavy grease and thick sprays build up fast under a sew-in, especially in Atlanta humidity.
Our go-to aftercare kit
- Silk scarf or bonnet, plus a silk pillowcase
- Spray bottle with water for light refreshes (mist, don’t soak)
- Wide-tooth comb and a small paddle brush for the hair lengths
- Lightweight scalp oil or scalp serum (use sparingly, only where you need it)
Detangle once a day, usually at night. Hold the hair near the root so you’re not tugging on the braids underneath. If you’re wearing a closure, be gentle around the perimeter and don’t overdo edge control. Smooth edges, yes. Stiff edges that need scrubbing to remove, no.
When to text us, and the 4–6 week maintenance check that saves your install
A little tightness the first day can be normal. Mild itching as your scalp settles can happen too. What we don’t want is pain, persistent bumps along the hairline, or a sew-in that stays damp underneath. If anything feels off, let us know early so we can help you keep your natural hair healthy under the style.

one of our regulars
Plan to come back around 4–6 weeks for a maintenance check. That visit is where we look at the wefts, check for slippage, and make sure your braid base is still doing its job. It’s also a perfect time for a quick refresh before events in Castleberry Hill or a night out downtown.
If you’re comparing options, our hair extensions services in Atlanta guide breaks down extension choices so you can pick what fits your lifestyle.
Need help between washes? If your scalp is sweaty, itchy, or you’re not sure if you should wash yet, reach out. We’ll tell you what to do next so you don’t guess and accidentally loosen your install.
