Locs Aftercare: First Week Do's & Don'ts for Atlanta Heat

Our shop stays spotless and the vibe is calm enough that people tell us they get to actually chill in the chair. Now the biggest rule after your retwist or fresh loc work is simple: keep your scalp dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. Atlanta heat and humidity will test that fast, so the first week is all about protecting your parts, keeping buildup away, and not undoing the clean look you just paid for.
First 24 to 48 hours after a retwist: keep it dry, keep it calm
Right after your appointment, your roots are set and your scalp is usually a little more exposed than you think. We generally recommend you don't wash, don't steam, and don't do anything that leaves your scalp damp for the first 24 to 48 hours. Water swells the hair, frizzes the root, and makes that crisp retwist look go soft early.
Quick rule for the first 2 days: dry scalp, minimal touching, and satin protection at night.
Do this right away
- Wrap your hair with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet before bed. If you roll around, add a satin pillowcase as backup.
- Keep your hands out of your hair. Twisting and rubbing at the new growth is the fastest way to cause frizz and loosen the root.
- Skip tight ponytails and heavy updos for a couple of days. Your edges will thank you.
Avoid these common mistakes
Don't pile on oils, butters, or waxy products trying to “seal” the style. That's how you get sticky roots, lint magnets, and buildup trapped inside the loc. And if you're headed to an event in Castleberry Hill, keep the look clean with a scarf in your bag for the ride home, especially if you're on MARTA and you're in and out of the Atlanta heat.
Days 3 to 7 in Atlanta humidity: sweat management without ruining your parts
This is the week where people accidentally undo their retwist. It's not always the wash, it's the sweat and the constant fixing. If you work out hard or you're outside in Atlanta heat, we generally recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours before intense workouts. If that's not realistic, you can still protect the style.
Sweat plan that keeps locs neat: blot your scalp with a clean towel or paper towel, do a quick cool rinse on the scalp if you need to, then air-dry completely. No heavy product afterward.
What to avoid in week one
- Picking at your scalp or scratching through the parts. It creates frizz and can irritate your scalp.
- Chlorine and pools too soon. It dries out the hair and can fade color fast.
- Layering scented oils on top of sweat. That mix tends to cause itchy scalp and buildup.
We've had people come in as a last-minute save and leave feeling brand new. That happens because the work is solid, but the aftercare is what helps it last. If you're bouncing between Decatur, East Point, College Park, Hapeville, or Smyrna during the week, keep a scarf and a small spray bottle in your car or bag so you're not constantly re-doing your hair with your hands.
Moisturizing tips for locs that don't turn into buildup
Moisture is important, but the wrong kind is what makes locs look dull and feel heavy. We like a light, water-based approach in the first week. That means a quick spritz, not a soak. Your locs should feel flexible, not coated.
Simple routine (2 to 3 times a week)
Mist lightly, focus on your scalp, then smooth down the locs with your palms. If you add oil, keep it to a tiny amount on the scalp or ends only, and don't do it daily.
Skip the heavy stuff early on
Butters, waxes, and thick creams tend to sit inside the loc and grab lint. If you've struggled with flakes or itch before, keeping product light usually helps a lot.
Our stylists are big on explaining what you're doing and why, because that's how you keep the “fresh out the salon” look longer. If you want more styling ideas that won't fight your retwist, check out our locs styling guide in Atlanta.
When to wash your locs (and how to do it without fuzzing up)
For most people, we recommend waiting before a full wash so your retwist has time to set. The exact timeline depends on your scalp, your workout schedule, and how quickly you sweat in Atlanta humidity. If you do wash, keep it clean and residue-free.
Washing basics we stand by
- Use a residue-free, sulfate-free cleanser. If you need a clarifying wash, don't overdo it.
- Massage gently with your fingertips, not your nails.
- Rinse longer than you think you need to. Product trapped in the loc is where the buildup starts.
- Dry fully. Air-dry is fine, a hood dryer is faster. Just don't leave your scalp damp.
If thinning edges are part of your story, handling your hair gently in wash week matters even more. We broke that down in our locs tips for thinning edges.
If something feels off, let us know early (we actually follow up)
A little tightness right after a retwist can be normal, especially if you've gone a while between appointments. What we don't want is pain that doesn't calm down, bumps along the hairline, or itching that turns into real irritation. If that's you, reach out so we can talk through what you're feeling and adjust the plan.
